âMy father would be proud of me right now,â Henry said as he removed the rubber tourniquet from Kurtâs arm. âVery proud.â He watched the tube fill with blood. âYou should have heard him complain when I gave up my practice.â Henry removed the full tube and placed a piece of cotton on Kurtâs arm. âCan you hold that?â
Kurt lifted his other arm slowly and rested his fingers on the cotton.
âThanks.â Henry looked at the tube of blood. âBetter get well, or at least well enough to do the same for me.â Henry saw the worried look on Kurtâs face. âNo. Not yet. Iâm not sick. But just in case.â He walked across the lab with the tube. . âSo, as I was saying, I started a practice many years ago. A patient, Mr. Winston,â Henry smiled, âspoke to me about working here as director. At the time, the pay was good, the hours short. Malpractice insurance wasnât making me broke, and...I didnât have to deal with sick people.â He snickered. âLook at me now. Iâve been working for days, taking showers in the menâs room, and dealing with an entire world thatâs sick.â He found the pot of coffee and poured a cup.
âPlan?â Kurt asked weakly.
âOh, yes.â Henry took his cup back over to his seat. âI came up with a plan. Lars loved it. Weâre just waiting now for approval. What it is...â Henry settled into his chair. âIs a way to help Chief Michael Owens of Lodi, a back-up of sorts.â
âWhy?â
âWhy not?â Henry lifted a hand. âImagine that the earth is a battleground. Which it actually is right now, beaten, burned. If we can just preserve one spot, leave one speck untouched, then weâve won.â His head turned quickly as the phone rang. âThatâs either Utah with their stats or the call Iâve been waiting for.â Hurriedly, Henry hurriedly reached for the phone. âYes.â He listened and nodded. âThank you.â The phone did not leave his hand; he merely disconnected the call and began to dial.
Kurt watched this. âWho are you calling?â
âApprovalâs come through. If Chief Owens can hold out for three days, this little plan of his might work. But thereâs no reason he why he canât initiate things on his end.â Henry lifted a finger to Kurt when the call was connected. âUm...yes, this is Dr. Henry Davis from the Barrow flu dispatch center. I need to speak to Chief Owens, please.â
